Answer: G'day and many thanks for your query

Firstly; let me say it is illegal, unethical and downright wrong for me to say what an item it worth without me testing it, seeing it etc.

Surely the people who sold it to you and provided the certificate gave you an estimated value - so I can only assume you are simply trying to verify that.

The question of Value comes down to WHAT VALUE?

Do you mean the INSURANCE value (replacement cost) or are you talking about a secondhand value or probate value or value under a forced sale condition or auction price etc...

The truth is there is NO FIXED value. There is only a price that you - as a willing Buyer were prepared to pay to a WILLING SELLER. The rest is academic and only there for the benefit of the Insurance industry. ie: An Appraisal.

For more information on Values - see the series of articles which explains 'Value' at the Jewellery Appraisal centre. The address is: http://www.online-jewelry-appraisals.com/

There is also a new website which has a Gemstone Appraisal system - but that (as I understand it) won't be available until the end of this year or early 2007.

That site is at: http://www.gemstone-appraisals.com/ but is currently under beta testing.

Stay tuned - as they say.

Hope this helps...

Topaz Values Question:

I recently purchased an “Imperial” topaz gem from H. Stern in Brazil for a significant amount of money.

Upon returning to Canada and getting it appraised I found out that it (apparently) is pink/precious topaz.

The appraisal was a bit lower ($500 Canadian less) than what I bought it for, but still in the same ballpark.

Colored Diamond Values Question:

Hello, last week I found a 1.34Ct rootbeer colored diamond, cubic in shape with slight valley like fissures.

Stone reflects metallic with rootbeer flashes.

Would a stone such as this have a higher value to a collector, or to have, “someone professional?” evaluate it?
