Answer: G'day Jo and many thanks for your query

Let's take a stab in the dark here, because I can't see or test the gem, but there are a couple of clues.

Firstly you say it was your grandmothers engagement ring so I shall take a guess in saying she was about 70 - 80 years old (born 1930's) and was married when she was approx 20. This means the engagement ring and band would have been made around circa 1950's.

One of the most popular designs then was the Sapphire and Diamond ring which brings us to our second clue.

You say the gem looks black - but when you hold it up to the light appears blueish.

You also didn't say where you live or where your grandmother lived and was married. In some parts of the world (Europe) there has been a liking for the 'Midnight Blue' Sapphire, which as you can tell from the name suggests a very dark blue colour - so dark it is almost black.

Of course all this is simply a guess...

You might like to check the 20th Century Antique Jewellery website at: http://www.jewellery-antiques or even eBay from time to time until you find something similar.

But the best advice I can give is "Get it Appraised" by a qualified gemmologist and Valuer (NOT your local high street jeweller) and make sure they provide you with a full gemmological report.

At least then you'll know for sure...

Hope this helps - just love guessing games - ;o)

Topaz Values Question:

I recently purchased an “Imperial” topaz gem from H. Stern in Brazil for a significant amount of money.

Upon returning to Canada and getting it appraised I found out that it (apparently) is pink/precious topaz.

The appraisal was a bit lower ($500 Canadian less) than what I bought it for, but still in the same ballpark.

Colored Diamond Values Question:

Hello, last week I found a 1.34Ct rootbeer colored diamond, cubic in shape with slight valley like fissures.

Stone reflects metallic with rootbeer flashes.

Would a stone such as this have a higher value to a collector, or to have, “someone professional?” evaluate it?
