Or what time period did they just use hallmarks on the gold jewellery?

But you are going to be VERY disappointed with the answer, because they have been hallmarking gold since 1238 - YES 1238!
Generally they consider around 1300 as the real start in Europe.
So a general scan does not help - you have to get more specific. Not only do you need to know ALL of the Hallmarks but what Shape the stamp is and what FONT the letters are written in etc.

It's quite a complicated problem as every country in the world has their own rules.
There is NO central registry of hallmarks, so anyone - anywhere can make and stamp their jewelry with whatever they want.
Can you imagine a small manufacturer in the LARGEST JEWELRY MAKING AREA IN THE WORLD (South East Asia and China) complying with British or European or American standards?
I don't think so...
Sorry to be so negative but this is why we get more questions on Hallmarks than any other jewelry problem after 'Price'.

Topaz Values Question:
I recently purchased an “Imperial” topaz gem from H. Stern in Brazil for a significant amount of money.
Upon returning to Canada and getting it appraised I found out that it (apparently) is pink/precious topaz.
The appraisal was a bit lower ($500 Canadian less) than what I bought it for, but still in the same ballpark.

Colored Diamond Values Question:
Hello, last week I found a 1.34Ct rootbeer colored diamond, cubic in shape with slight valley like fissures.
Stone reflects metallic with rootbeer flashes.
Would a stone such as this have a higher value to a collector, or to have, “someone professional?” evaluate it?
